Ustad Rashid Khan, a classical vocalist from the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, is the great-grandson of Inayat Hussain Khan, the founder of the gharana.
Famed classical singer Ustad Rashid Khan, an esteemed figure in the classical music realm and a notable member of the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, passed away at 55 on Tuesday, January 9. Ustad Rashid Khan had been fighting prostate cancer and was under medical care at a private hospital in Kolkata.
A hospital official stated that approximately 3:45 PM, the patient passed away due to the sickness, despite the medical team’s diligent efforts. The renowned painter is survived by a daughter, two boys, and his wife. Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, visited the hospital and expressed her profound sadness, pointing out the great loss to the country and the music community.
“I learned about his passing. It’s a huge loss for our entire country and the entire music community. I feel a lot of sadness as it’s hard to believe that Rashid Khan is not with us anymore,” stated Banerjee, offering her condolences to the grieving family. The chief minister shared that Ustad Rashid Khan would be honored with a gun salute and state honors before his final rites, set for Wednesday.
His body will be at a mortuary today and will be taken to Rabindra Sadan on Wednesday for people to pay their last respects. The renowned musician, who had been on ventilation, faced health complications after a cerebral attack last month, marking a challenging phase in his fight against the illness.
